The Greek Orthodox Easter in Hydra island (27/04/2016)

Visit Hydra and celebrate with us! Throughout the  Holy Week various events  recount the Passion of Christ at all churches. Important days include  Holy Wednesday and Good Friday, when fasting prohibits consumption even of oil. Holy Thursday we dye hardboard eggs red, a color symbolizing the blood of Christ.

On the night of Good Friday all Epitaphs gather at the northern entrance of the Monastery of the Formation in the harbor and the procession winds through the cobbled streets of Hydra Town.

One of the most beautiful and most picturesque customs on Hydra is the procession of the Epitaph into the sea, conducted with great solemnity on the night of Good Friday in Kamini Harbor.

The procession of the Epitaph in Kamini takes place earlier than those from Hydra Town’s churches so as to allow visitors to see all of them.

The Resurrection takes place at midnight on Holy Saturday in an emotional, candlelit atmosphere in all the churches of the island. It ends on Easter Sunday with the traditional roast lamb and the “burning of Judas” in the evening.Since the early 1990’s the burning of Judas has taken place in the post of Hydra,on the jetty in front of the School of the Merchant marine.

We are looking forward to seeing you!
